1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe - obo - Missouri for sale in Dexter, Missouri

$2,000

Needing to clear up some parking space, so the Turbo Coupe has to go: a sad day indeed. Fortunately my loss is your gain. The car is a white 1988 model with several modifications. I purchased this car as a shell and rebuilt it with the power train and interior from my last (rust bucket) donor TC. Needless to say, hours of attention and detailed work went into this build to recreate the nearly stock setup. I don't know for certain the miles on the chassis, but I believe it's around 130,000. The motor and stock gauges (moved over with the engine from the donor car) have a mileage of around 183,000. This car has only two little, solid rust spots and is ridiculously solid; it came from Alabama, and I'm pretty sure has never seen winter road salt.
Work completed within the last four or five years (in no particular order):
- cylinder head refreshed and new head gasket
- nearly every engine sensor replaced with NAPA parts (no cheap Autozone stuff)
- Ranger roller camshaft and followers
- Upgraded alternator (95 amp) from Ford Contour
- Low beam and fog light relays added
- Ignition switch replaced
- New battery three years ago (kept on a tender through the winters)
- T3 turbo from earlier Turbo Coupe with stock 1988 intercooler
- Bosch Bypass Valve
- Gills-style Boost Control Valve set at 15 psi
- 3" Stinger exhaust with glass pack muffler and turn down under car
- 3.73 rear end gears (the car was an auto before I rebuild it to a five speed)
- New power steering rack and tie rods
- JVC CD player (not a really new one, but a good one)
- Aftermarket speakers (don't remember the brand, previous owner installed them)
- All new engine seals when engine was placed in the car
- Copper cooling lines installed to replace rust-prone stock units
- Aluminum ranger oil pan (no low oil sensor functionality now)
- New front struts (Monroe SensaTracs, no more functional PRC)
- One axle's worth of new tires a few years ago (minimal miles on them)
- All new vacuum lines
- K&N cone filter installed by PO.
Known issues/concerns:
- Two of the tires aren't the best, while two are quite new. The two older ones will get the car to your place and even go for several more seasons probably, but they are old and weather cracked.
- The dash does not perfectly match the new interior. The car originally had the red leather interior (in rough shape when I bought the car), but now has the transplanted raven interior from the donor car. I did not switch the dash, however, as the raven donor dash was in poor shape. Instead, I painted the dash greywith special-purpose dash paint. Though the dash is crashed, it matches the interior quite well. Unfortunately, it is not blue and thus not original to the raven interior.
- The windshield is cracked.
- Driver's door lock actuator doesn't work
- Passenger window is off the track, an easy fix
- Hood popper lever recently broke and the hood requires pliers to pop the hood. Haven't gotten around to replacing the cable yet.
- Some scratches in the paint on the hood and deck lid from the PO.
- Oil leak from somewhere low on the engine. I was pretty perturbed at this after replacing all the seals (and using the proper seal setting tool for the front crankshaft seal). If I had to guess I would put it around the oil pan gasket or perhaps the dipstick hole. I haven't had time to investigate it thoroughly.
Other points worth mentioning:
- Regular maintenance, but it is probably in need of an oil change. I haven't driven the car much in the last year or two (read: less than 100 miles a year). As such, for the last few years I have been changing the oil on a yearly basis, and it's time for a new change.
I have a ton of parts to send with this car. I'm getting out of the Turbo Coupe game with this sell, and I have everything from extra injectors to sensors to glass to body panels to engine parts. It all goes with the car. You'll probably want to bring a truck to get all the extras home (i.e. spare hood in great condition).
I'm sure I've forgot something in here. I'll be glad to answer questions via email, text, or phone.
Not only does this car run like a top, it is also a very reliable car as far as 30 year old cars are concerned. I've basically built my version of a dream TC with practically no part unchecked or not replaced. I just need to get rid of it unfortunately. I hate to let it go, but I hate more to let it sit in my driveway and atrophy. Take this opportunity to get a great slightly modified TC.
